Trundle Bed Frames and Finishes

Today's trundle bed is a hideaway convenience. Twin-size trundle beds or trundle bunk beds offer extra space in children's rooms. Daybeds are the most popular trundle bed frame; they can be used in bedrooms, home offices, or family rooms, providing a sitting area by day, a bed by night, and a roll-out or pop-up trundle when guests arrive. Any bed with adequate clearance can house a trundle. Common trundle frame sizes are 33 inches (for daybeds) and 39 inches for twin-, full-, and queen-size beds. There are two types of trundle frames. One rolls out from under the bed when extra space is needed and the trundle remains at floor level. Drawer-style trundle beds resemble captain's beds. The second type of trundle frame is a pop-up that has a mechanism to raise the trundle to the height of the main bed. Lift styles are closely related to pop-ups, but involve more setup time.

Trundle beds do not require box springs. Trundle bed frames come with one of three decks: spring decks have intertwined wire supports, poly decks have several small supporting springs, and slatted decks have two metal or wood rails with wood or metal cross slats.

Finishing Touches There is a trundle frame and finish to please every decorator. Choose wood trundle bed styles with headboards and footboards in natural pine, oak, walnut, cherry, maple, or painted wood finishes; coordinating pieces can be added to create a complete suite. Or accent your cherished antique dressers and wardrobes with metal trundle beds in black, white, gold, or brass finishes.

Daybeds offer all the advantages of both wood trundle beds and metal trundle beds. Wood daybeds can have a substantial presence in any room, while metal daybeds can be ornate or elegantly understated. Pull-out drawer-style trundles double as extra storage drawers when sleeping space is not in use.
