When it comes to trundle beds, their form really does follow their function. Trundle beds are actually a pair of beds. One slightly smaller bed slides underneath an upper bed (usually a twin-size), and a lower bed, which moves on rollers or casters, can be pulled out to act as a separate bed that rests below the upper mattress. Many trundle bed styles feature a trundle that can be snapped into a higher position to create a "single" larger bed, making a trundle bed a smart space-saving choice for smaller bedrooms.

While trundle beds come in all styles, materials and finishes (including daybed, wrought-iron and wooden designs), they also feature all kinds of mattresses. Because of their design, trundle beds generally do not have box springs, but they do allow for owners to mix and match mattress styles. If the bed will be used by different people who prefer varying degrees of mattress firmness, an extra firm mattress can be purchased for the trundle and an ultra-plush pillow top can be purchased for the upper bed. If the trundle bed, once pulled out, will be secured for use as a single large bed, choose two identical mattresses. |
Should you opt to remove the lower trundle, many trundle beds are designed to accommodate a trundle drawer in place of the lower bed. If you'd like to utilize this trundle bed feature, make sure you select a design that has compatible drawers. Trundle drawers can be either one large drawer or can contain two, three, or more separate drawers within the storage unit.
