Trundle Bed Types

Trundle beds offer sleeping accommodations for guests without hogging a lot of space. A second bed stores under the main bed until needed. Pop-up trundle beds can be raised so that both beds are the same height. Sleeping space can be equivalent to one king-size bed or used as two separate twin-size beds. Another variation of the pop-up trundle bed is the lift-up trundle, which has folding legs. Lift-up trundles are less expensive than pop-ups and require more effort for setup and take-down, but the end result is the same.

Pull-out trundle beds remain low to the floor. Attention should be paid to the amount of space beneath the bed before choosing a trundle and mattress. Twin trundle bed mattresses range from 8-10 inches thick. Drawer trundle beds are considered pull-outs and are available only in wood. These are similar to bunk beds, except that the drawer remains on the floor and the trundle is not directly below the upper bed. Some trundle beds have a pull-out bed with storage drawers below.

Practical Choices
If purchasing a daybed, adding a trundle is a practical, space-saving decision. Many conventional bed frames are high enough for storing low-profile trundles that roll in and out of place on wheels or casters. Some trundle bed drawers can double as storage space when the mattress is removed. When the mattress is in place in the drawer, it is completely concealed.

Drawer-style trundle beds are similar to captain beds that were designed for closet-size ship quarters. Trundle beds are so versatile that some are built right into the frames of bunk and loft beds. Trundle beds do not require a separate box spring and usually have a link spring construction consisting of a set of metal rails, strong metal supports, and closely spaced links for flexible support.
